Housing

Addressing our housing crisis is urgent, as it will help with both the affordability issues people face as well as moving people off the street and into housing.

Our office will partner with nonprofit colleges, churches, synagogues, mosques and other houses of worship to utilize the new “Yes in God’s Backyard” law. I will form an interfaith committee of willing and available partners to utilize this law to its full potential and build affordable housing on sites, prioritizing veteran, senior, and family housing.

We also must utilize vacant parcels of land, identified in a past audit from Controller Galperin and highlighted by the Mayor, to build cabin communities and more permanent supportive housing. We can look to LAUSD’s example, using land parcels to create affordable housing for employees and bus drivers. We will explore utilizing these parcels for workforce housing for those in the first few years of employment with the City.

Finally, I would consider the Sepulveda VA Hospital in North Hills for Veteran housing. The VA hospital in West LA announced a similar plan earlier this year, to provide housing to 120 homeless veterans through a partnership with the Biden Harris Administration. This could be a great way for CD 12 to receive federal funding and address one of the most vulnerable communities that are unhoused.
